Conceptualization

Rationale: E-Speak was built to address the growing number incidents of bullying among teens and students in school and social media. According to UNESCO (2018), one-third of youth in the world experienced bullying in school. This ranges from social, cyber, verbal, and physical bullying.

Among all bullying incidents, less than half (46%) of victims actually notify an adult about the bullying incident. Others never report due to fear of retaliation from the bully. More than half (75%) of the students who participated in the survey and qualitative interviews (N=22), have experienced bullying first hand, most commomly social, verbal and cyberbullying. Therefore, interventions to prevent bullying in all forms are much needed (Messias, et.al, 2014).

The anonymous messaging feature of the app helps the student send a message to their school, a relevant organization, or institution for emotional support, counselling, and reporting of any bullying incident they witnessed or experienced. This feature could also help them express their thoughts and get some supports on their mental health and well-being without the fear of being judged.
